Middle Cities Education Association is a consortium of urban school districts which was formed out of a shared commitment to improving educational opportunities for the urban learner. The unique mission and emphasis of Middle Cities is to serve as an advocate for member districts to insure quality educational programs for all urban students.

Joyce Irvine was the principal of H.O. Wheeler Elementary School in Burlington, VT. During her 6 years there, she made a great impact on students, families, and teachers. Her superintendent agrees that her work has been phenomenal, that she's a good principal, and a strong leader. Yet, last July, Joyce was removed from her job so that the Burlington School District could qualify for federal stimulus money.

Every year we hear about budget crises and teacher layoff notices that are affecting Michigan schools. Michigan Radio's new investigative unit, Michigan Watch, has been reviewing the budgets, questioning lawmakers, pouring over reports and interviewing educators to find out what's happening and whether anything can be done. This series of reports that will look at the problems and examine some of the solutions.
