Flint Community Schools rolls out enhanced STEM curriculum

Superintendent Anita Steward says Brownell Academy and Holmes Middle School have been designated as STEM schools for years, but had gotten away from the curriculum.

The district is now working with Michigan State University on re-launching the curriculum that focuses on science, math, engineering and technology with hands on learning and group projects.

Brownell will serve kindergarten through fifth grade and Holmes Middle School will be the STEM academy for sixth through eighth grade.

"They're going to be engaged in some hands on activities where they get to break some things apart [and] rebuild them," said Flint Schools Superintendent Anita Steward. "This is going to be truly hands on learning around science and math."

The entire district starts school on Wednesday online only because of COVID-19. Leaders plan to re-evaluate their pandemic response in September.
